Janucá o Jabukiá, también llamado el Festival de las luces, es una celebración judía de ocho días que conmemora la victoria de los judíos sobre los griegos y la re-dedicación del santo templo de Jerusalén en el siglo II a. C. Janucá, significa "dedicación" (inscripción en un templo para conservar la fecha en que se consagró), empieza el 25 de Kislev del calendario hebreo, fecha que este año coincide con el 20 de diciembre.

(Hanukkah or Chanukah, also called the Festival of Lights, it is a eight-day Jewish celebration that commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah, which means "dedication [ceremony marking the opening of a public building], begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, a date which coincides this year with the evening of December 20.)

La fiesta se celebra encendiendo cada día una las velas del candelabro de nueve brazos llamado januquiá (no confundirlo con la menorá que tiene siete brazos y sólo puede utilizarse dentro del templo), el intercambio de regalos y jugar al dreidel.

(The holiday is celebrated with the lighting of a nine-branched candelabrum, called hanukia –(similar to the seven-branched menorah whose use is forbidden outside the Temple), exchanging gifs and playding with dreidels.)

El dreidel o sevivón, que es un trompo o perinola de cuatro caras planas. En cada una de ellas figura una letra en hebreo que forman el acrónimo Nes Gadol Haia Sham, "un gran milagro ocurrió allí". Parece que esta costumbre tiene su origen en la prohibición de la lectura de la Torá en los tiempos de Antioco y los jóvenes judíos disimulaban cuando llegaban los soldados, haciendo como que estaban jugando en vez de estar estudiando la Torá.

(A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top. Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet forming the acronym Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, "a great miracle happened there". This tradition has its roots in the times of Antiochus, when reading the Torah was forbidden, and the young jews gathered to read it pretended to be playing when soldiers popped in.)

¿Cómo se juega al dreidel?

También es tradición en Janucá tomar comidas fritas, como los latkes (tortitas fritas de patata) y los sufganiots (donuts fritos rellenos de mermelada o crema).

(Traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil, such as latkes, potato pancakes, and sufganiyots, fried jelly doughnut.)

Aunque en los Estados Unidos es un gran evento comercial, desde el punto de vista religioso es una festividad menor que no afecta el calendario ni laboral, ni escolar.

(Even if in the US it is a major commercial phenomenon, from a religious perspective it remains a relatively minor holiday that places no restrictions on working or attending school.)

Kwanzaa, que significa "primeros frutos de la recolección" en suajili, es una fiesta secular relativamente reciente, creada por el Dr. Maulana Karenga el 26 de diciembre de 1966 como una forma de unir a los afroamericanos como comunidad.

("Kwanzaa," which means "first fruits of the harvest" in the African language of Swahili, is quite a recent "tradition". It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor in 1966 as a way to bring African-Americans together as a community.)

En casa de algunos jefes de estado

Este fin de semana, para descansar de tanta corrección, he estado dando una vuelta "virtual" por el palacio del Elíseo (residencia del jefe del estado francés) y, como ha sido interesante, he tenido curiosidad por ver si podía visitar alguna otra residencia. Así que me he dado también una vuelta "virtual" por el número 10 de Downing Street (residencia del jefe de estado británico) y por la Casa Blanca (Estados Unidos, claro). Sin embargo no he podido recorrer la residencia del jefe de estado español, el palacio de la Moncloa, ni de ningún jefe de estado más. Lástima, porque resulta muy entretenido.

(This weekend, to take a break from so much marking, I've taken a "virtual" tour of the Élysée Palace (official residence of the President of the French Republic), and as it has been quite interesting, I have had the curiosity of looking for other official residences to visit. So, I have also taken a "virtual" stroll around Number 10 Downing Street (official residence of the British Prime Minister) and the White House (official residence of the President of the United States, of course). However, I haven't been able to "visit" the residence of Spain's Prime Minister, The palace of Moncloa, or any other official residence. Too bad, it is so entertaining.)

Anegado por la correción de examenes y las notas de la primera evaluación, sin embargo, como en los Estados Unidos ayer fue Día de Acción de Gracias quiero compartir este divertido vídeo musical:"No puedes zamparme" (una adaptación del éxito de las Supremes: "No puedes meterle prisa al amor").
En inglés gobble significa tanto "zampar" como "gluglutear o graznar".
Os recomiendo que veáis la versión orginal de este éxito. Merece la pena.

Tengo suerte. Esta semana he conocido dos talentos que me han hecho feliz: a Mark Newman (mi entrada anterior), y hoy, a Jesús Orellana, un autor de novelas gráficas español que ha creado íntegramente un corto independiente sin presupuesto durante un año: Rosa. Os dejo el tráiler, pero podéis ver el corto completo aquí. Dura casi 10 minutos pero merece la pena. Os lo recomiendo.

(I feel lucky. This week I have met two talents who have made me happy: Mark Newman (my previous post) is one of them, and today, Jesus Orellana, a Spanish comic-artist who has created entirely an independent short film with no budget during a year: Rosa. I leave you with the trailer but you can see it fully here. It's about 10 minutes long, but it is really worth seeing.)

Cuando veo un trabajo hecho con talento y maestría, me hace sentir tan bien que siempre me reconcilia un poco con la cruda realidad. No sé quien dijo que "Una buena obra de arte es como un amigo: te acompaña , te anima e inspira". Para mí nada más cierto.

(When I see something done with talent and masterliness, it makes me feel so good that I somehow become reconciled to the harsh reality. I do not remember who said that "A good work of art is like a friend: it keeps company, comforts and inspires." I fully agree. )

Por eso cuando tropecé con las esculturas de Mark Newman, tenía que, de alguna manera, rendirle el pequeño homenage de mi admiración con esta entrada. Mi forma de darle las gracias por hacerme sentir bien cuando veo su trabajo.

(So, when I came across these sculptures made by Mark Newman I had to express my admiration and pay tribute to his talent with this post. It is my way of saying thank you for making me feel so good with his work.)

Nacido en 1962, Mark Newman es un artista norteamericano que lleva unos diecinueve años en activo mostrando su increíble talento a través de su arte.

(Born in 1962, Mark Newman is an American artist who has a career of 19 years behind showing his remarkable style through art.)

Pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en su estudio Mark Newman Sculpture Inc. Según sus palabras: "Practica mucho. Dibuja mucho. Observa, está todo a tu alrededor. Estudia a las personas, sus caras dondequiera que estés. Navega por internet para observar el trabajo de otros artistas. Es muy estimulante".

Por fin es viernes y aunque con las clases, la corrección de ejercicios, el mantenimiento de la página del Aula Virtual 2.0 del colegio al que todas las semanas subo material para mis cuatro grupos, más el mantenimiento de mi sitio... a veces me resulta difícil acudir a este blog entre semana, como me gustaría. Pero a nuestra cita de los viernes...¡nada me podría impedir acudir a ella! Os invito a disfrutar de este corto de animación "Un salto de gigante" que me parece realmente delicioso.

Este año, el Jardín botánico de Nueva York ha organizado una exposición con las mayores calabazas del mundo e invitó a Ray Villafane a esculpir una de ellas en directo en el parque, el fin de semana pasado. Villafane, del que ya os enseñé una muestra de su talento, escogió la calabaza de Brant y Eleanor Bordsen, de 768 kg, y en quince horas obtuvo un increíble cuadro zombi.

(This year, the New York Botanical Garden hosted a collection of the world's largest pumpkins and invited Ray Villafane to carve one of them live in the park, last weekend. Villafane, whose talent I showed you last year, chose Brant and Eleanor Bordsen's 1,693 pound pumpkin and turned it into this amazing zombie tableau in 15 hours.)

Un policía por medio de una manivela subía o bajaba el brazo articulado que usaba luces de gas verdes y rojas. Desgraciadamente, en enero de 1869, hubo un escape de gas que causó una explosión e hirió al oficial a cargo de la señal. Hubo de esperar más de cincuenta años para que se retomara la idea.

(The first pedestrian crossing signal was erected in Bridge Street, Westminster, London in December 1868 and it was an invention of John Peake Knight, a railway engineer. A police officer raised and lowered manually the arm and it was gas illuminated at the top (green and red. Unfortunately, in January 1869, the gas used to illuminate the lights at the top leaked and caused an explosion, injuring the police operator. El arte del Kae Sa Luk, el arte de tallar frutas y verduras convirtiéndolas en complicadas flores y formas agradables a la vista y al paladar, nació en Tailandia en 1346. Ningún otro país practica esta forma de decorar la comida. Sólo una poca gente hoy día se adiestra en este antiguo arte cortesano, incluso en Tailandia.

(The art of Kae-Sa-Luk, the art of carving fruit and vegetables into intricate flower shapes that please both the eye and the palate, was begun in Thailand in 1346. No other country practices this same decorative treatment of foods. Only a few people are still trained in this ancient court art, even in modern Thailand.)

Hace unos días leí una entrevista a un joven ilustrador, Benjamin Harff, que se había pasado un año ilustrando el Silmarillion de J. R. R. Tolkien en la tradición de los manuscritos ilustrados medievales. Y tenía que presentároslo por si no lo conocíais tampoco.

(A few days ago I read an interview with a young illustrator, Benjamin Harff, who had spent a year creating a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion in the tradition of medieval European illuminated manuscripts. I had to to introduce him to you in case you didn't know him either.)

"I was born in 1980 in Euskirchen, Germany. I have always been interested in the manifold ways of art, especially painting and drawing as well as music. Later I learned other art forms also, such as poetry and martial arts. My father is a tiler, so I early realized that pure inspiration is useless without skill, knowledge and hard work."

"He nacido en Euskirchen, Alemania, en 1980. Siempre me han interesado las múltiples formas de arte, especialmente la pintura y el dibujo, así como la música. Más tarde aprendí otras formas de arte también, como la poesía y las artes marciales. "I created the deluxe-Silmarillion for my exam at the Academy of Arts... ¡Por fin! Semana dura para los chicos que tenían que presentarse a Selectividad: para ellos, porque en tres días y seis exámenes se juegan entrar en la universidad para hacer la carrera que quieren; y, para mí, porque como profesor que les acompaña significa estar allí con ellos los tres días desde las 8:30 de la mañana hasta las 13:00 y de las 15:30 hasta las 18:30, por si me necesitan.

(At last! A hard week for my students who had to take Selectividad (University Access Tests): hard for them because in three days they stake on six tests their access to university to do the degree they want; and a hard week for me, as a teacher, because from 8:30 AM to 1 PM and from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM I have to be there with them in case they need me.)

Nos merecemos el fin de semana y espero que ellos, además, su esfuerzo tenga fruto.

(We deserve this weekend and I hope that their efforts bear fruit.)

Como podéis ver he cambiado la cabecera del blog... por los lápices de colores de mis hijas. Y es que, hace unos días, leí esta cita de Robert Fulghum:

(As you can see I have changed the blog header...now it's a picture of my draughters' crayons. The reason is that, a few days ago, I read this quote by Robert Fulghum:)

"We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box."

"Podemos aprender mucho de los lápices de colores; algunos están afilados, algunos son bonitos, algunos son sosos, mientras otros están lleno de colorido, algunos tienen nombres raros, pero todos han aprendido a vivir juntos en la misma caja."

En el momento en que lo leí, me acordé de mi clase: una pequeña caja de lápices de colores a los que, de alguna manera, tengo que ayudar a encontrar el mejor modo de participar en ese inmenso lienzo de la vida con sus mejores trazos.

(The moment I read it, I thought of my coming classes: full of crayons of all sort and I have to help them find the best way to participate in the huge canvas of life with their best colour.)

¡Vaya! No sé si sabré, y eso que este año empiezo mi vigesimoquinto curso. En fin, lo haremos todos lo mejor que sepamos, como siempre. Mientras tanto esos lápices me ayudarán a centrarme en la tarea.

No sólo la comida, sino la forma de comer nos brindan la oportunidad de ver las diferencias culturales que nos definen.

(Not only food, but also the way of eating provide an insight into the cultural differences that define us.)

Lo que consideramos buenos modales en la mesa resulta grosero en otras culturas y viceversa. En Alemania, por ejemplo, no utilice nunca el cuchillo para cortar las patatas hervidas que te sirven porque ofenderás a la anfitriona (estás dando a entender que no están suficientemente tiernas). Sorbe ruidosamente los fideos en Japón y en China –demuestra que disfrutas de la comida.

(What we consider proper table manners looks rude in other cultures and vice versa. In Germany, never use your knife to cut the boiled potatoes you are served because you will insult your hostess (you are implying that they are not tender enough). Slurp your noodles in Japan and China– it shows you are enjoying your lunch.)

Hay tres formas muy extendidas de comer: con cubiertos, con palillos o con los dedos; y cada una tiene sus reglas. ¡Echémosles un vistazo!

(In general there are three widespread ways of eating: with cutlery, with chopsticks or with your fingers; and each one has its rules. Let's have a glance at them!)

CON CUBIERTOS

La cultura occidental utiliza el cuchillo, el tenedor y la cuchara, aunque hay dos formas de utilizarlos: el estilo norteamericano y el estilo europeo.

(Western culture uses knife, fork and spoon, although there are two styles to use them: The American style and the European style.)

El estilo norteamericano (también llamado "método zigzag"): el cuchillo en la mano derecha, el tenedor en la mano izquierda, con los "dientes" siempre hacia abajo. Corta un bocado, coloca el cuchillo en el borde del plato, con el filo hacia dentro. Pasa el tenedor a la mano derecha y llévate la comida a la boca. Repeat for each bite.)

CON PALILLOS

Los palillos se utilizan en toda Asia Oriental (China, Corea y Japón), aunque se cree que nacieron en China durante la Dinastía Shang (1766 a.C. – 1122 a.C.), hace más de 3000 años. También se le atribuye a Confucio su extensa popularidad ya que éste equiparaba los cuchillos con actos de agresión lo que iba en contra de sus enseñanzas y por lo tanto no tenían cabida en la mesa.

(Chopsticks are used in the whole eastern Asia, including China, Korea and Japan although it is believed that they originated in China during the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC - 1122 BC), more than 3,000 years ago. Confucius equated knives to acts of aggression which went against his teachings and thus, did not allow them on his table.)

Tanto el protocolo chino como japonés comparten algunos tabúes al utilizar los palillos que tenemos que tener en cuenta:

Elogio a la amistad —2ª parte

As a young child my son Sam became enchanted with the Big Man... no surprise. To a child Clarence was a towering fairy tale figure, out of some very exotic storybook. He was a dreadlocked giant, with great hands and a deep mellifluous voice sugared with kindness and regard. And... to Sammy, who was just a little white boy, he was deeply and mysteriously black. In Sammy's eyes, "C" must have appeared as all of the African continent, shot through with American cool, rolled into one welcoming and loving figure.

Cuando era niño, mi hijo Sam quedó encantado con el Grandote ... no es de extrañar. Para un niño, Clarence era una figura imponente de cuento de hadas, de algún libro de cuentos muy exótico. Era un gigante con rastas, con las manos grandes y una voz profunda y melodiosa endulzada con amabilidad y consideración. Y ... para Sammy, que era un pequeño niño blanco, él era profunda y misteriosamente negro. A los ojos de Sammy, "C" debió de parecerle como la personificación del continente africano, con un toque de cool americano, y todo envuelto en una acogedora y cariñosa figura.

So... Sammy decided to pass on my work shirts and became fascinated by Clarence's suits and his royal robes. He declined a seat in dad's van and opted for "C's" stretch limousine, sitting by his side on the slow cruise to the show. He decided dinner in front of the hometown locker just wouldn't do, and he'd saunter up the hall and disappear into the Temple of Soul.

Así que ... Sammy decidió pasar de mi camisas de trabajo y se sintió fascinado por los trajes de Clarence y sus túnicas espléndidas. Rechazó un asiento en la camioneta de papá y optó por la limusina de "C", sentado a su lado en el lento paseo hacia el show. Decidió que cenar en frente de la taquilla del camerino simplemente no bastaba, y se alejó lentamente por el pasillo y desapareció en el Templo del Alma.

Of course, also enchanted was Sam's dad, from the first time I saw my pal striding out of the shadows of a half empty bar in Asbury Park, a path opening up before him; here comes my brother, here comes my sax man, my inspiration, my partner, my lifelong friend. Standing next to Clarence was like standing next to the baddest ass on the planet. You were proud, you were strong, you were excited and laughing with what might happen, with what together, you might be able to do. You felt like no matter what the day or the night brought, nothing was going to touch you.

Por supuesto, también estaba encantado el padre de Sam; desde la primera vez que vi a mi amigo saliendo de entre las sombras de un bar medio vacío en Asbury Park, abriendo camino ante él; ahí viene mi hermano, aquí viene mi hombre del saxo, mi inspiración, mi compañero, mi amigo de toda la vida. Clarence could be fragile but he also emanated power and safety, and in some funny way we became each other's protectors; I think perhaps I protected "C" from a world where it still wasn't so easy to be big and black. Racism was ever present and over the years together, we saw it. Clarence's celebrity and size did not make him immune.

Clarence podía ser frágil, pero también emanaba de él poder y seguridad, y de alguna manera extraña nos convertimos en protectores uno del otro; creo que tal vez protegí a "C" de un mundo dónde todavía no era tan fácil ser grande y negro. I think perhaps "C" protected me from a world where it wasn't always so easy to be an insecure, weird and skinny white boy either. But, standing together we were badass, on any given night, on our turf, some of the baddest asses on the planet. We were united, we were strong, we were righteous, we were unmovable, we were funny, we were corny as hell and as serious as death itself.

Creo que tal vez "C" me protegía también de un mundo donde no siempre era fácil ser un chico blanco inseguro, extraño y flaco. Pero, juntos éramos duros, en una noche cualquiera, en nuestro territorio, unos de los más duros del planeta. And we were coming to your town to shake you and to wake you up. Together, we told an older, richer story about the possibilities of friendship that transcended those I'd written in my songs and in my music. Clarence carried it in his heart. It was a story where the Scooter and the Big Man not only busted the city in half, but we kicked ass and remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship would not be such an anomaly.

E íbamos a vuestra ciudad para zarandearos y despertaros. Juntos, contábamos una historia más antigua y más profunda sobre las posibilidades de la amistad que trascendía lo que yo había escrito en mis canciones y mi música. Clarence lo llevaba en su corazón. Era una historia en la que Scooter y el Grandote no sólo arrasaban la ciudad, sino que pateábamos culos y rehacíamos la ciudad, dándole la forma del tipo de lugar donde nuestra amistad no sería una anomalía.

And that... that's what I'm gonna miss. The chance to renew that vow and double down on that story on a nightly basis, because that is something, that is the thing that we did together... the two of us. Clarence was big, and he made me feel, and think, and love, and dream big. How big was the Big Man? Too fucking big to die. And that's just the facts. You can put it on his grave stone, you can tattoo it over your heart. Accept it... it's the New World.

Y eso ... eso es lo que voy a echar de menos. La oportunidad de renovar ese voto y arriesgarnos en esa historia todas las noches, porque eso es algo, eso es lo que hicimos juntos ... los dos juntos. Clarence era grande, y él me hizo sentir, y pensar, y amar, y soñar con grandes metas. ¿Cómo de grande era el Grandote? Demasiado grande para morir. Y eso sólo son los hechos. So, I'll miss my friend, his sax, the force of nature his sound was, his glory, his foolishness, his accomplishments, his face, his hands, his humor, his skin, his noise, his confusion, his power, his peace. But his love and his story, the story that he gave me, that he whispered in my ear, that he allowed me to tell... and that he gave to you... is gonna carry on.

Así que, voy a echar de menos a mi amigo, su saxo, la fuerza de la naturaleza que era su sonido, su gloria, su locura, sus logros, su rostro, sus manos, su humor, su piel, su ruido, su confusión, su poder, su paz. I'm gonna leave you today with a quote from the Big Man himself, which he shared on the plane ride home from Buffalo, the last show of the last tour. As we celebrated in the front cabin congratulating one another and telling tales of the many epic shows, rocking nights and good times we'd shared, "C" sat quietly, taking it all in, then he raised his glass, smiled and said to all gathered, "This could be the start of something big."

La semana pasada, Bruce Springsteen publicó en su página una versión revisada del elogio que hizo de Clarence Clemons, su amigo, la semana anterior en su funeral. Es tal canto a la amistad que tengo que traducirlo para todos aquellos que no tienen la suerte de poder leer la versión original. Y como es tan largo, lo haré en dos partes.

(Last week, Bruce Springsteen published on his web site a revised version of the eulogy he delivered the week before for Clarence Clemons, his friend. It is such a moving hymn to friendship that I have to translate it for all those people who cannot read the original version. As it is quite long I have divided it in two parts.)

Antes de empezar, y para entender lo que Bruce Springsteen cuenta, hay que saber que, en la canción en la que reconoce que describe el nacimiento de la E Street Band, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out –título casi intraducible aunque podríamos interpretarlo como "El marginado de la Avenida Diez"—Bruce, en el primer verso se apoda a sí mismo Bad Scooter y a Clarence Clemons lo llama Big Man (grandote).

(Before starting, and to understand what Bruce Springsteen is talking about, we have to know that in the song that describes the birth of the E Street Band, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out –almost impenetrable title which we could interpreted as "The outsider of Tenth Avenue"—Bruce, in the first verse nicknames himself Bad Scooter and Clarence Clemons is called big man).

I've been sitting here listening to everyone talk about Clarence and staring at that photo of the two of us right there. It's a picture of Scooter and The Big Man, people who we were sometimes. As you can see in this particular photo, Clarence is admiring his muscles and I'm pretending to be nonchalant while leaning upon him. I leaned on Clarence a lot; I made a career out of it in some ways.

He estado sentado aquí escuchando a todos hablar de Clarence y mirando esa foto de nosotros dos allí. Es una imagen de Scooter y el Grandote, los que fuimos a veces. Como pueden ver en esta foto en particular, Clarence está admirando sus músculos y yo me hago el indiferente mientras me apoyo en él. Those of us who shared Clarence's life, shared with him his love and his confusion. Though "C" mellowed with age, he was always a wild and unpredictable ride. Today I see his sons Nicky, Chuck, Christopher and Jarod sitting here and I see in them the reflection of a lot of C's qualities. I see his light, his darkness, his sweetness, his roughness, his gentleness, his anger, his brilliance, his handsomeness, and his goodness.

Aquellos de nosotros que hemos compartido la vida de Clarence, hemos compartido con él su amor y su confusión. A pesar de que "C" se ablandó con la edad, siempre fue apasionado e impredecible. Hoy veo a sus hijos Nicky, Chuck, Christopher y Jarod sentados aquí y veo en ellos el reflejo de un montón de cualidades de "C". Veo su luz, su oscuridad, su dulzura, su rudeza, su gentileza, su rabia, su brillantez, su hermosura y su bondad.

But, as you boys know your pop was a not a day at the beach. "C" lived a life where he did what he wanted to do and he let the chips, human and otherwise, fall where they may. Like a lot of us your pop was capable of great magic and also of making quite an amazing mess. This was just the nature of your daddy and my beautiful friend. Clarence's unconditional love, which was very real, came with a lot of conditions.

Pero, como sabéis vosotros muchachos, vuestro padre no era una persona fácil con la que convivir. "C" vivió una vida en la que él hizo lo que quería, afectara a quien o qué afectara. Al igual que muchos de nosotros, vuestro padre era capaz de ser fabuloso y a la vez armar unos líos tremendos. Esto fue sólo la forma de ser de vuestro padre y mi maravilloso amigo. El amor incondicional de Clarence, que era muy real, iba acompañado de un montón de condiciones.

Your pop was a major project and always a work in progress. "C" never approached anything linearly, life never proceeded in a straight line. He never went A... B.... C.... D. It was always A... J.... C.... Z... Q... I....! That was the way Clarence lived and made his way through the world. I know that can lead to a lot of confusion and hurt, but your father also carried a lot of love with him, and I know he loved each of you very very dearly.

Vuestro padre era un proyecto importante siempre en evolución. "C" nunca se acercaba a las cosas de forma lineal, la vida nunca transcurría en línea recta. Nunca fue A. .. B. ... C. ... D. ¡Siempre fue A. .. J. ... C. ... Z. .. P. .. I. ...! Esa fue la forma en que Clarence vivió e hizo su camino por el mundo. Sé que puede dar lugar a mucha confusión y dolor, pero vuestro padre también llevaba un montón de amor en él, y sé que él os quería mucho a todos y cada uno de vosotros.

It took a village to take care of Clarence Clemons. Tina, I'm so glad you're here. Thank you for taking care of my friend, for loving him. Victoria, you've been a loving, kind and caring wife to Clarence and you made a huge difference in his life at a time when the going was not always easy. To all of "C's" vast support network, names too numerous to mention, you know who you are and we thank you.

Muchos se preocuparon y cuidaron de Clarence Clemons. Tina, me alegro de que estés aquí. Gracias por cuidar de mi amigo, por amarle. Victoria, has sido una esposa cariñosa, amable y bondadosa para Clarence y tuviste una gran importancia en su vida en un momento en el que las cosas no eran fáciles. Your rewards await you at the pearly gates. My pal was a tough act but he brought things into your life that were unique and when he turned on that love light, it illuminated your world. I was lucky enough to stand in that light for almost 40 years, near Clarence's heart, in the Temple of Soul.

Vuestro premio os espera a las puertas del cielo. Mi amigo era irrepetible, él trajo cosas a vuestras vidas que eran únicas y cuando encendía la luz del amor, ésta iluminaba el mundo. Yo tuve la suerte de estar en esa luz durante casi 40 años, cerca del corazón de Clarence, en el Templo del Alma/Soul.

So a little bit of history: from the early days when Clarence and I traveled together, we'd pull up to the evening's lodgings and within minutes "C" would transform his room into a world of his own. Out came the colored scarves to be draped over the lamps, the scented candles, the incense, the patchouli oil, the herbs, the music, the day would be banished, entertainment would come and go, and Clarence the Shaman would reign and work his magic, night after night. Clarence's ability to enjoy Clarence was incredible.

Así que hagamos un poco de historia: desde los primeros días, cuando Clarence y yo viajábamos juntos, nos arrastrábamos a nuestras habitaciones por la noche y en cuestión de minutos "C" transformaba la suya en un mundo propio. "C" always knew how to live.

Long before Prince was out of his diapers, an air of raunchy mysticism ruled in the Big Man's world. I'd wander in from my dressing room, which contained several fine couches and some athletic lockers, and wonder what I was doing wrong! Somewhere along the way all of this was christened the Temple of Soul; and "C" presided smilingly over its secrets, and its pleasures. Being allowed admittance to the Temple's wonders was a lovely thing.

Mucho antes de que Prince dejara los pañales, un aire de misticismo provocativo gobernaba el mundo de Big Man. Yo me paseaba por mi camerino, que contenía unos cuantos sofás y unas taquillas, ¡y me preguntaba qué estaba haciendo mal! En algún momento todo esto fue bautizado como el Templo del Alma, y "C", presidida con una sonrisa sus secretos y sus placeres. Ser admitido en las maravillas del Templo era una cosa hermosa.

Es viernes y... ¡Fin de curso! Lo cierto es que este es el mejor momento: cuando tienes una larga fila de "fines de semana" por delante y muchas cosas que quieres hacer: leer, descansar, aprender a manejar algunos programas, disfrutar con los amigos... ¡Seguro que no me aburro!

(It's Friday and... End of the school year! This is the best moment, for sure: with a long row of "weekends" ahead and many things I intend to do: reading, resting, learning to manage some new programs, enjoying friends...I won't get bored!)

A los que como yo empezáis vuestras vacaciones, os deseo que disfrutéis lo mismo que yo, y a los que todavía tienen que acudir a su trabajo, que lleguen pronto vuestras vacaciones.

Cuando viajamos, son los detalles pequeños los que más nos despistan. Recuerdo cuando –hace siglos—tomé por primera vez un ascensor en Gran Bretaña y pulsé la B para bajar a la planta calle. Cuando se abrieron las puertas me quedé desorientado al encontrarme en el sótano ('basement'). Y es que se me había olvidado que para la planta calle hubiera tenido que pulsar la G ('ground floor' –planta baja).

(When we travel, sometimes little details make the difference. I remember when –ages ago—I took a lift for the first time in Great Britain and I pressed the B button to go to the ground floor (in Spain 'planta Baja'). When the doors opened, I was puzzled to be in the Basement. I had completely forgotten that to go to the ground floor I had to press the G button.)

También debemos recordar que los norteamericanos llaman a la planta calle 'primer piso'. Y los franceses, Rez-de-Chaussée (RC/RDC), 'a ras de la calzada'.

(We must also remember that Americans call the ground-level floor of a building the 'first floor', and the French, 'rez-de-chaussée' (RC/RDC), 'level- with- the-street'.)

En algunos ascensores norteamericanos el piso que da acceso a la calle va señalado con una estrella de cinco puntas. Y, por supuesto, tanto en Estados Unidos como en Canadá, el piso número 13 suele "faltar".

(In some American lifts the button which indicates the ground-level floor has a five-pointed star. And, of course, both in the United States and Canada, the 13th floor is "missing".)

En los países asiáticos además del piso 13, omiten cualquier piso cuyo número lleve cuatro (es decir, 4, 14, 24, 34, 40-49,etc) por ser la pronunciación de este número muy similar a la de la palabra 'muerte'. Por lo que es fácil que estando en el piso 60 de un edificio, en realidad estés en el piso 44, el peor de todos.

Cuenta con 61 ascensores de los cuales dos son ultra-rápidos: recorren 1.010 metros por minuto, unos 16,83 metros por segundo. Ahora ya han sido superados por el ascensor del Burj Khalifa cuya velocidad asciende a 18 m/s.

(And now something amazing. Taipei 101 in Taiwan is the second tallest building in the world, with 101 storeys and 1,671 ft high. La primera es la historia de Cahew, una perra labrador de 14 años, ciega y sorda pero su amiga Libby, una gata de 7 años la acompaña a todas partes, apartándola de los obstáculos.

(The first one is the story of Cahew, a 14-year-old Labrador, blind and deaf, but her friend Libby, 7, has become her guide of Cashew and goes with her everywhere, steering her friend away from obstacles.)

La segunda es esta campaña publicitaria de Pro Infirmis que lleva a cabo un experimento: hay muy pocas personas que no sienten empatía por las personas con deficiencias. Sin embargo, el asiento de Fabian –el chico disfrazado —a menudo permanece vacío.
Como dicen al final: ¿Tenemos que disfrazarnos para acercarnos? ¡Acércate!

(The second story is a spot of Pro Infirmis which conducts an experiment: there are only a few people who don't have empathy with disabled people. Nevertheless, the passenger seat in the public bus next to Fabian –the boy under the disguise—often stays empty.
As they ask at the end: "Do we need to disguise ourselves to get closer? Get closer!)

Clarence Clemons, In Memoriam

Clarence "Grandote" Clemons, el saxofonista de la E Street Band de Bruce Springsteen, falleció el sábado pasado después de sufrir una apoplejía la semana pasada. Desde 1973, he disfrutado de cada uno de los solos que ha tocado y comoquiera que muchos chavales no lo conocían, quiero rendirle un homenaje dejándoles con este vídeo de 1982 en el que Clarence y toda la banda está en su mejor momento.
Descansa en paz "Grandote". Nosotros seguiremos disfrutando de tu música.
Como ha dicho Bruce Springsteen de su amigo:"Su vida, su recuerdo y su amor seguirán vivos en nuestra banda."

(Clarence "Big Man" Clemons, saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, died last Saturday after suffering a stroke the previous week. Since 1973, I have enjoyed every solo he has played and as many kids did not know him, I want to honour him with this video of 1982 where he and the whole band are at their best .

Si decimos "taxi" y "Londres", ¿quién no imagina al instante este famoso icono inglés: el taxi negro?

(If we say "taxi" and "London", who does not instantly picture this famous English icon: the black cab?)

De hecho, son los únicos que pueden recoger pasajeros en las calles, ya que el otro tipo de "taxis", los 'mini taxis' deben ser alquilados previamente por teléfono o en una de sus oficinas.

(In fact, they are the only ones which can pick up passengers on the street, as the other type of "taxis", minicabs, must be booked in advance by phone or in any of their offices.)

(When the drivers began using lighter cabriolets, two-wheeled vehicles from France, at the beginning of the 19th Century, they became known as 'cabs'. Likewise, when Wilhelm Bruhn invented the taximeter in 1891, the term 'taxi' was born. As its name says (from French taxe, 'price, and Greek metron, 'measure')the taximeter measures the distance travelled and time taken of all journeys, allowing an accurate fare to be charged. By the way, the fares were still set by Parliament as they have always been until 2000 when Transport For London took in charge the laws governing London's taxi trade.)

La grafología es una técnica que permite el estudio y análisis de la escritura sobre todo en relación con la psicología. No debe confundirse con el peritaje caligráfico que es una disciplina basada en métodos científicos.

(Graphology is the pseudoscientific study and analysis of handwriting especially in relation to human psychology. The term is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to forensic document examination which is a discipline based on scientific methods).

Teniendo en cuenta que es el cerebro el que dirige la mano cuando escribimos, podemos aceptar que nuestra escritura muestra, hasta cierto punto, nuestra personalidad y nuestro estado de ánimo.

(Bearing in mind that it is our brain which directs our hand when we write, we can accept that our handwriting shows, to some extent, our personality and mood.)

Para analizar un escrito se tienen en cuenta varios parámetros:

(To analyse a piece of handwriting we have to look at some parameters:)

PRESIÓN EJERCIDA AL ESCRIBIR

(Pressure of the writing)

La presión ejercida al escribir muestra el nivel de compromiso y hasta qué punto se toman las cosas en serio. Si la presión es exageradamente fuerte, puede ser señal de una personalidad que reacciona primero y pregunta después.

(Pressure indicates commitment and taking things seriously. If the pressure is excessively heavy, it may be the sign of a person who reacts first and asks questions afterwards.)

Por el contrario, si la escritura es ligera es señal de sensibilidad hacia el entorno y empatía hacia la gente, aunque si la presión es irregular, puede ser señal de falta de vitalidad.

(Light pressure shows sensitivity to atmosphere and empathy to people, but can also, if the pressure is uneven, show lack of vitality.)

TAMAÑO DE LAS LETRAS

(Size of the letters)

El tamaño de la letra está relacionado con el nivel de autoestima de la persona. Cuanto mayores las letras, mayor ese nivel de autoestima. O de que se fijen en tí.

(The size of the letters is related to self-esteem: the bigger the letters are, the more self-esteem. Or the need to be noticed.)

INCLINACIÓN DE LAS LETRAS

(Slant in letters)

La inclinación de las letras muestra nuestra actitud hacia los demás. Si se inclinan a la izquierda, indica introversión; si se inclinan a la derecha, somos extrovertidos; si las letras aparecen rectas, entonces somos independientes. Si la escritura oscila entre ambas direcciones, es signo de inmadurez o cansancio.

(The slant of the letters shows our attitude toward the others. If they slant to the left, we are introvert; if they slant to the right then we are extrovert; if the letters are straight up and down then we are independent. If the handwriting slants in all different directions, it means immaturity or stress.)

LONGITUD DE LOS BUCLES SUPERIORES DE LAS LETRAS

(Length of upper loops in the letters)

Cuánto más altos, más propensos a las palabras que a la acción. Cuánto más pequeños, más proclives a llevar a cabo las cosas.

(The taller the upper loops, the more the person is all talk but no action. Short upper loops mean, this person is all about getting things done.)

La posición de la barra de la 't' muestra tu firmeza. Cuánto más alta la barra, más autoritario eres; cuanto más baja, más sumiso. La barra ascendente indica oposición a la autoridad; la descendente, intolerancia y terquedad. Si es larga, impaciencia y audacia; si es corta, sensibilidad y timidez.

EL PUNTO DE LA 'I'

(Dotting the 'i')

Poner el punto en la 'i' es la señal de alguien meticuloso y pendiente de los detalles. Cuánto más cerca esté el punto de la 'i', más propenso a comprobar y confirmar todo una y otra vez. Cuánto más alejado esté el punto, más descuidado y propenso a cometer errores. La ausencia de punto significa que se trata de alguien distraído o incluso irresponsable.

(Dotting the 'i' is considered the sign of someone who is meticulous and detail oriented. The closer the dot is to the body of the i, the more inclined to re-check and re-confirm everything. The farther the dot is, the more careless and prone to make mistakes. Missing dots means someone absent minded or even irresponsible. )

Hay más parámetros para los profesionales, pero podemos observar que las deducciones tienen bastante que ver con el sentido común. En abril de 2008 La Fábrica Real de la Moneda británica eligió nuevos diseños para el reverso de monedas británicas de 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 peniques y de 1 libra.

(In April 2008 the Royal Mint chose new designs for the reverse of Britain’s coins worth 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence and 1 pound. )

Se sacó a concurso el diseño de las monedas y Matthew Dent, un joven diseñador gráfico de Bango, Gales del Norte, fue el ganador entre 4000 participantes con una idea original: las seis monedas forman el contorno del escudo de armas real, que aparece al completo en la moneda de 1 libra.

He dado con este "time lapse" (secuencia de vídeo acelerada) sobre España y quería compartirlo. El autor, Ben, no tiene datos en su perfil de Vimeo, pero apostaría que se trata de un británico no sólo de aficionado a la fotografía sino a la cultura también.
Es reconfortante ver que se conoce a España no sólo por la crisis sino por lo mejor que tiene, su cultura.
