Eran las 7:51 del viernes 12 de enero de 2007, en plena hora punta en la estación de metro de L'Enfant Plaza en Washington DC. En los 43 minutos siguientes, mientras el mejor violinista del mundo tocaba seis piezas clásicas, 1.097 personas pasaron delante de él sin prestarle atención.

(It was 7:51 a.m. on Friday, January 12, the middle of the morning rush hour, at L'Enfant Plaza station in Wahsington DC. In the next 43 minutes, as Joshua Bell, the best classical musician in the world, performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by without noticing him.)

Joshua Bell and his Gibson ex Huberman stradivarius

Joshua Bell, siempre toca el mismo violín: el Stradivarius Gibson ex Huberman, hecho a mano en 1713 durante la "época dorada" del maestro italiano. Bell lo compró en el año 2001. Tuvo que vender su propio Stradivarius Tom Taylor y pedir prestado gran parte del resto de la cantidad: se dice que el precio fue de unos 3,5 millones de dólares.

(Joshua Bell always performs on the same violin: the Gibson ex Huberman Stradivarius, handcrafted in 1713 during the Italian master's "golden period." Bell bought it in 2001. He had to sell his own Tom Taylor Stradivarius and borrow much of the rest. The price tag was reported to be about $3.5 million.)

(Things never got much better. In the three-quarters of an hour that Joshua Bell played, seven people stopped what they were doing to hang around and take in the performance, at least for a minute. Twenty-seven gave money, most of them on the run -- for a total of $32 and change. That leaves the 1,070 people who hurried by. Exactly only one person recognized Bell, and she didn't arrive until near the very end.)

Un dato curioso: cada vez que un niño pasaba cerca, se paraba a mirar. Y, a cada vez, venía un padre a recogerlo y meterle prisa.

(Something funny: Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. And every single time, a parent scooted the kid away.)
