As the header of the blog makes apparent, I love books. I can even remember the first book I read —not its title nor the author, but I remember it was the story of a little dog, a dachshund. The walls of our home are lined with bookcases to the point that when I enter a secondhand bookshop I feel at home meeting old friends which are on my shelves as well.

Como es evidente por la cabecera del blog, me encantan los libros. Hasta recuerdo el primer libro que leí —no el título ni el autor, pero sí que era la historia de un pequeño perro salchicha. Las paredes de nuestra casa están cubiertas en su mayoría por estanterías y cuando entro en una librería de lance parece que estoy en casa al ver algunos viejos amigos que también están en mis estantes.

Holler Design

When I was a child I spent a lot of hours playing around in a carpenter's shop while he was making chairs, tables and cupboards. I can't remember the man's appearance —only the fact that he was old— but I still can feel the warm touch of the sawdust and the perfume of wood.

Cuando era niño pasé muchas horas jugando en una carpintería mientras el carpintero hacía mesas sillas y armarios. No recuerdo los rasgos del hombre —sólo que era mayor— pero todavía siento el calor del serrín y el perfume de la madera.

This video illustrates HD's linear process of harvesting logs from the Alexander family farm in Lascassas, TN, processing them on their sawmill and air-drying them for use. The lumber is then used to construct Southern-inspired modern furniture.

"Este vídeo muestra el proceso completo de Holler Design desde que talan el árbol en la granja familiar de los Alexander en Lascassas, Tennessee, lo cortan en su aserradero y secan la madera al aire libre para trabajarla después. Esa madera se utiliza para construir muebles de inspiración sureña.

By the way, the community's namesake is Bartolomé de las Casas (1474-1566), a Spanish Dominican friar on Christopher Columbus's third expedition who was known as the "Apostle of the Indians" in recognition of his efforts to protect the native population from slavery and abuse.

A propósito, el nombre de la comunidad proviene de Bartolomé de las Casas (1474-1566), un fraile dominico español que participó en la tercera expedición de Cristóbal Colón y que era conocido como el "apóstol de los indios" en reconocimiento a sus esfuerzos para proteger a la población nativa de la esclavitud y del maltrato.

Dibujar de una sola pincelada

I haven't been able to find out the artist of such a stunning way of drawing, but as the movie had no sound, I have added the music —Ripples by Kevin MacLeod— because it seemed to me that this performance deserved to be highlighted by a musical background.

No he podido averiguar quién es el artista  de tan apabullante forma de dibujar, pero ya que el vídeo no tenía sonido, he añadido la música —Murmullos de Kevin MacLeod— porque me parecía que el trabajo merecía ser resaltado con un fondo musical.

With part of the Latin phrase Dum spiro, spero ('while I breathe, I hope') as the title of their film, these students of the ESMA have made a short story which reminds me of my childhood when I lapped up the Adventures of Asterix and Obelix. It's full of talent and a breathtaking pace.

(Con parte de la locución latina Dum spiro, spero ("Mientras respiro, espero [tengo esperanza]") por título de su corto, estos estudiantes de la ESMA (École superieure des Métiers Artistiques - Escuela Superior de Oficios Artísticos) han realizado un trabajo que me recuerda mi infancia cuando me entusiasmaba con las aventuras de Astérix y Obélix. Rebosa talento y tiene un ritmo endiablado.

When I was a child, I spent many hours in a carpenter's next to my home and, although I can't remember the face of that person, I can still feel the warmth of wood and the smell of sawdust, resin, and glue, all wrapped up in the screech of the saw bench.

Cuando niño, pasé muchas horas en una carpintería que había al lado de mi casa y, aunque no recuerdo la cara de esa persona, aún siento el calor de la madera y huelo el perfume del serrín, la resina y la cola, todo ello envuelto en el chirrido de la sierra mecánica.
