A fantastic -and troubling- short animated film by Tyler Novo, a student at Sheridan College, Toronto: Mean Teddies. Sure that was why we slept so well at night with our teddies.

Un fantástico -e inquietante- corto de Tyler Novo, estudiante de Sheridan, Toronto: "Ositos de peluche malos". Seguro que por eso dormíamos tan bien por la noche con nuestros peluches.

What a better way to start the week than with a talented and moving animated short film which has just won an Oscar?

¿Qué mejor forma de empezar la semana que con el conmovedor y lleno de talento corto de animación que anoche ganó un Oscar?

"Made by Moonbot Studios, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore offers a modern tribute to an old world. Made with an animation style that blends stop motion with computer animation and traditional hand-drawing, the silent film pays homage to a bygone era when elegantly printed books inhabited our world." (source)

Realizado por los Estudios Moonbot, Los fantásticos libros voladores del Sr. Morris Lessmore ("menos [es] más") ofrece un tributo moderno a un viejo mundo. Hecho con un estilo de animación que combina el stop motion con la animación por ordenador y el dibujo tradicional a mano, la película muda rinde homenaje a una época pretérita cuando los libros elegantemente impresos habitaban nuestro mundo.

I hope this era is not bygone at all.
Espero que no sea una época tan pretérita.

Tengo suerte. Esta semana he conocido dos talentos que me han hecho feliz: a Mark Newman (mi entrada anterior), y hoy, a Jesús Orellana, un autor de novelas gráficas español que ha creado íntegramente un corto independiente sin presupuesto durante un año: Rosa. Os dejo el tráiler, pero podéis ver el corto completo aquí. Dura casi 10 minutos pero merece la pena. Os lo recomiendo.

(I feel lucky. This week I have met two talents who have made me happy: Mark Newman (my previous post) is one of them, and today, Jesus Orellana, a Spanish comic-artist who has created entirely an independent short film with no budget during a year: Rosa. I leave you with the trailer but you can see it fully here. It's about 10 minutes long, but it is really worth seeing.)

La amistad entre un toro de las Highlands y una oca nació en enero de 2001 en los campos de Knapdale Eco Lodge en Gisbourne, Nueva Zelanda después de que la oca perdiera su pareja.

(The friendship between a Highland bull and a goose was forged in January 2001 in the paddocks of Knapdale Eco Lodge in Gisbourne, New Zeland, after the goose lost her mate.)

Desde entonces la insólita pareja es inseparable. En el lugar viven gansos y ocas, ganado de las Highlands, 10 emúes, un cerdo, 10 venados y 2 bueyes y la oca suele mantener a éstos alejados de Hamish –su amigo el toro.

(The unlikely pair have been inseparable since. In the same area there are geese, Highland cattle, 10 emus, a pig, 10 deer and two cattle beasts and the goose normally keeps the other animals away from Hamish, his bull friend.)

Las ocas están entre las aves que establecen lazos de por vida como las palomas, los cisnes, las águilas americanas, los gavilanes colirrojos, y los pingüinos.

(Geese are among birds that bond for life such as pigeons, swans, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks and penguins.)

Y no como estos dos "amigos" de este corto de animación que Catherine Hicks hizo en la Escuela de Arte y Diseño de Ringling y presentó en el año 2009 en el Festival de Animación por ordenador SIGGRAPH.

(Unlike those two "friends" in the animated short film Catherine Hicks made at Ringling College of Art and Design and featured in the 2009 SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival.)
