Aunque los humanos deben de haber envuelto sus pies en pieles de animales en los primeros tiempos, Erik Trinkaus, un antropólogo de la Universidad de Washington en St. Louis, dice que el calzado propiamente dichos apareció entre 40.000 y 26.000 años atrás.

(Though humans may have wrapped their feet in skins in the early times, Erik Trinkaus, an anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis, says sturdy shoes originated between 40,000 and 26,000 years ago.)

Sandalias de artemisa, tejidas con fibras de corteza de la planta, encontradas en 1938 en la cueva de Fort Rock en Oregón. Tienen una antigüedad de entre 10.000 y 9.300 años.

El zapato de Areni-1 es un zapato de cuero de 5.500 años de antigüedad. Fue encontrado en el año 2008 en excelentes condiciones en la cueva "Areni-1" situada en la provincia armenia de Vayots Dzor. Como se puede ver, tiene "cordones" de cuero que pasan por "ojales".

(The Areni-1 shoe is a 5,500-year-old leather shoe. It was found in 2008 in an excellent condition in the "Areni-1" cave located in the Vayots Dzor province of Armenia. As we can see, it has leather "shoelaces" passing through "eyelets".)

Desde entonces la técnica ha mejorado y la imaginación ha trabajado para elaborar "artísticas" maneras de atarse los cordones. En su sitio, Ian's Shoelace Site, Ian Fieggen explica un número increíble de formas de hacerlo. He aquí algunas que me han llamado la atención.

"Sometimes life can hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. You've got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking and don't settle. As all matters of the heart you'll know when you find it."

Estos chicos parecen haber empezado temprano: tienen 3, 3 y 6 años y han hecho este vídeo: tardaron 2 horas en hacerlo. El de 6 años escribió el guión y manejó la cámara, mientras los de 3 años hicieron la nave. su padre hizo la música con Matlab:Cthulhu contras los Siths o La venganza del monstruo Zanahoria.

(It seems these children have started early: they are 3, 3 and 6 years old and they have made this video: it took them 2 hours. The 6-year-old wrote the script and operated the camera, while the two 3-year-olds made the spaceship. Their father generated the music in Matlab: Cthulhu vs. the Sith or The Carrot Monster Revenge).

Eso significa 24 dibujos por segundo de animación. Comoquiera que este corto dura 2'17'', Stephanie K. Sim ha tenido que hacer unos 1848 dibujos. ¡Magnífico trabajo! este "Árbol de las historias"

(This Classical Animation, which received the award for "Best Classical or Stop Motion Animation" at the 2006 CAEAA (Canadian Awards for the Electronic & Animated Arts) awards, has been hand drawn. That means 24 drawings per second. As the short movie lasts 2'17'', Stephanie K. Sim has had to draw about 1848 pictures. Great work!)

El arte del Kae Sa Luk, el arte de tallar frutas y verduras convirtiéndolas en complicadas flores y formas agradables a la vista y al paladar, nació en Tailandia en 1346. Ningún otro país practica esta forma de decorar la comida. Sólo una poca gente hoy día se adiestra en este antiguo arte cortesano, incluso en Tailandia.

(The art of Kae-Sa-Luk, the art of carving fruit and vegetables into intricate flower shapes that please both the eye and the palate, was begun in Thailand in 1346. No other country practices this same decorative treatment of foods. Only a few people are still trained in this ancient court art, even in modern Thailand.)
