(When I see something done with talent and masterliness, it makes me feel so good that I somehow become reconciled to the harsh reality. I do not remember who said that "A good work of art is like a friend: it keeps company, comforts and inspires." I fully agree. )
(So, when I came across these sculptures made by Mark Newman I had to express my admiration and pay tribute to his talent with this post. It is my way of saying thank you for making me feel so good with his work.)
(Born in 1962, Mark Newman is an American artist who has a career of 19 years behind showing his remarkable style through art.)
(He spends most of his time in his studio (Mark Newman Sculpture Inc.) where he molds these astounding sculptures. In his words: "Practice a lot. Draw a lot. Observe, it’s all around you. Study people and their faces whereever you are. Surf the net for other artist work. It’s very inspiring.")
Espero que disfrutéis también.
(Enjoy!)

(Graffiti have always existed and found in caves, on buried walls, in the Catacombs of Rome, in ruins, etc. Children have always been fond of writing their names and scribbling on public walls.)
(But at the end of the 60s this practice was taken to extremes (first in Philadelphia, very soon in New York), favoured by the introduction of spray paint and widespread commercial messages.)
(At the beginning, graffiti consisted of a kind of game based on competition: each "writer" reproduces his or her name in order to make it appear more often than the rest. Very soon, to make names stand out and the small and simple tags – the signature of the graffiti writer – turned into complex calligraphies – wild style or Bubble letters – and huge, coloured letterings – Blokbusters.)
(The difference between masters of graffiti – writers – and beginners – taggers – is the complex and creative work of the finished compositions – pieces– that writers perform. Writers often work in teams, their crew, and they choose where, when and how to make graffiti. They are usually the most skilled with drawing and handling of aerosols.)
(However, the trouble with graffiti is that some of them are true works of art and others pure vandalism that end up degrading the environment in addition to causing a lavish and unnecessary expenditure on their removing that could be devoted to more useful social purposes.)
(In Philadelphia they came up with the idea of replacing those daubed walls by works of art and for a more effective plan, they proposed the graffiti writers to engage in learning more positive and productive ways to express their creativity, teaching them to paint murals and in collaboration with the community residents, to embellish the neighbourhood instead of damaging it.)
(Since its inception in 1984, the Mural Arts Program has completed more than 2,500 indoor and outdoor murals throughout Philadelphia. This effort has brought art to the cityscape, turning graffiti-scarred walls into scenic views, portraits of community heroes and abstract creations.)
(The example has spread, not only in the United States. In 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn created the Favela Painting project, with the help of the Firmeza Foundation. Their aim is the creation of striking artworks in unexpected places. It collaborates with local people to use art as a tool to inspire, create beauty, combat prejudice, and attract attention.
Their efforts yielded two murals which were painted in Vila Cruzeiro, Rio's most notorious slum, in collaboration with local youth. The artworks have become points of pride in the community and throughout Rio.)
¿Qué creéis? ¿El arte puede cambiar el mundo?
