(Graphology is the pseudoscientific study and analysis of handwriting especially in relation to human psychology. The term is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to forensic document examination which is a discipline based on scientific methods).
(Bearing in mind that it is our brain which directs our hand when we write, we can accept that our handwriting shows, to some extent, our personality and mood.)
(To analyse a piece of handwriting we have to look at some parameters:)
PRESIÓN EJERCIDA AL ESCRIBIR
(Pressure of the writing)

(Pressure indicates commitment and taking things seriously. If the pressure is excessively heavy, it may be the sign of a person who reacts first and asks questions afterwards.)

(Light pressure shows sensitivity to atmosphere and empathy to people, but can also, if the pressure is uneven, show lack of vitality.)
TAMAÑO DE LAS LETRAS
(Size of the letters)

(The size of the letters is related to self-esteem: the bigger the letters are, the more self-esteem. Or the need to be noticed.)
INCLINACIÓN DE LAS LETRAS
(Slant in letters)
(The slant of the letters shows our attitude toward the others. If they slant to the left, we are introvert; if they slant to the right then we are extrovert; if the letters are straight up and down then we are independent. If the handwriting slants in all different directions, it means immaturity or stress.)
LONGITUD DE LOS BUCLES SUPERIORES DE LAS LETRAS
(Length of upper loops in the letters)
(The taller the upper loops, the more the person is all talk but no action. Short upper loops mean, this person is all about getting things done.)
LOS BUCLES INFERIORES DE LAS LETRAS
(Lower loops in the letters)

(The smaller, then the more this person says what he/she feels. The larger, the more energy.)
LA BARRA DE LA 'T'
(The 't' bar)

(The position of the t-bar shows your assertiveness. The higher its position, the more authoritative you are; the lower, the more submissive. If the bar is upwards, you oppose authority; downwards, you are intolerant and stubborn; if long, impatient and bold; if short, sensitive and shy.)
EL PUNTO DE LA 'I'
(Dotting the 'i')

(Dotting the 'i' is considered the sign of someone who is meticulous and detail oriented. The closer the dot is to the body of the i, the more inclined to re-check and re-confirm everything. The farther the dot is, the more careless and prone to make mistakes. Missing dots means someone absent minded or even irresponsible. )
(There are more parameters for professionals but we can see that the deductions are quite common sense. I was curious to see expert graphologists in action and that is why I have chosen these samples of today's two popular people –popular for very different reasons, fortunately):
Escritura de Osama Bin Laden
(Osama Bin Laden Handwriting)

primera línea:Tu hermano en el Islam
segunda línea: Usama bin Mohammed bin Laden
tercera línea: [su firma]
(First line: Your brother in Islam / Second line: Usama bin Mohammed bin Laden /Third line: [his signature])
(To analyze someone's personality through the Arabic handwriting is difficult for a European but Anna Koren, an Israeli graphologist, made this analysis of the writing of Osama Bin Laden in 2008:)
"Both the handwriting and signature are very slow in a way that seems almost unreasonable. They are more drawn or painted rather than written and express a personality that is full of anxieties on one hand, yet the writer has a strong drive to prove himself on the other hand."
"This creates a conflict that makes it very difficult for the writer to deal with reality. It creates a very frustrated man with difficulty to feel content from his achievements and a need for constant attention."
"The size of the writing indicates a megalomaniac tendency: As long as he is noticed, he feels a temporary relief from his seeded and tremendous urge to prove himself."
"He is protective and at the same time domineering with a strong need to rule. He constantly fears others taking over his place and as a result he keeps his guard and is continuously under a great deal of pressure."
"He is very prudent, fears failure and avoids risks. Lacking improvising skills, he carefully calculates his steps and tries to avoid uncertain situations."
"He aspires for perfection at what he does and is often obsessive about his unwillingness to accept any form of mediocrity."
"Every action he takes is carefully examined and he advances only after every detail has been meticulously planned and taken into account. This significantly slows down his activity, but at the same time, makes his actions thorough and prudent."
"His personality expresses a double standard, as if he is two individuals. This can also be seen in the signature, which shows two circles: black and white. In actuality, the writer is an individual without gray areas, agility or compromises."

(Next week I will try to find something interesting about famous signatures.)
(As White House Staff Secretary Lisa Brown explains in the video it is a custom which seems to date back as far as Harry S. Truman or his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt.)
(The rationale for this practice is simple: the ball-pen or the fountain-pen used to sign becomes a historical object and is usually given to those who have helped drive forward the law. Therefore, the more people have participated, the more pens are given away.)
(Although Lisa Brown says in the video she believes that the greatest number of pens used were 40 when the President (it was Bill Clinton) signed the Taxpayer Relief Act in 1997, actually the record is 75 fountain-pens when Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, giving one of the first pens to Martin Luther King Jr.)
(But how does the President sign his name with so many pens? What if he runs out of letters? In the above signatures we can see the difficulty and all the strokes (signature on the right) when President Obama signed the Health Care Act in March. President Kennedy had the process figured out: if there were many pens, he spelled out his full name and added a flourish under his signature.)
(Not every President follows the tradition, however: President George W. Bush preferred signing with only one pen and then offering the others as souvenirs.)
(These pens are custom-made and they usually bear the presidential seal and the president's signature. President Barack Obama uses pens of Cross' Townsend collection.)
