¡Es viernes! ¡Sonríe! -16

Friday at last 16

(One of the most difficult punctuation marks to use, I think, are the commas, and improper use always brings trouble:)

"Then with torches lit and red crosses in hand, all the friars went to the refectory to dinner, and while they ate, someone preached from the pulpit."

"Then, with torches lit and red crosses in hand, all the friars went to the refectory to dinner, and while they ate someone, preached from the pulpit."

A veces salva vidas:

(It sometimes saves lives:)

"Perdón imposible, enviar a Siberia"
"Perdón, imposible enviar a Siberia"

(Alexander III personally wrote the death sentence of a prisoner with the following words: "Pardon impossible, to be sent to Siberia. His wife Dagmar (daughter of Christian IX, king of Denmark) believed the man innocent. She saved his life by transposing the comma. The sentence then read: "Pardon, impossible to be sent to Siberia." via )

(Or puts things in their place:)

A woman, without her man, is nothing.

A woman: without her, man is nothing.

"Mis aficiones incluyen cocinar perros y personas interesantes."

(Sometimes the misuse of commas when talking about oneself in a letter applying for a post can bring negative consequences: "My interests include cooking dogs and interesting people.")

Y no es lo mismo:

(And it makes a difference:)

"No, don't stop!"

("¡No, no pares!")

"No, don't, stop!"

("¡No, no, para!")

Y una broma:

(To finish, a joke:)

Teeth said to Tongue, "If I just press you little hard, you will get cut."
Tongue replied, "If I misuse one word against someone, then all the 32 of you will come out at once."

(And if we want to know more about punctuation in English we should read this apage at the Oxford English Dictionary)

¡Feliz fin de semana!

(Have a nice weekend!)

Francisco dijo...

Among young people, the use of commas could be considered too sophisticated...
