Aprender vocabulario con Springsteen

Aquí va otra canción de Bruce Springsteen, de su último trabajo, y es interesante por el vocabulario de uso diario -en el supermercado- que nos puede interesar.

• aisle: pasillo (en supermercados, aviones, teatro) / corridor (en casas, oficinas).

• await = wait for = esperar, aguardar
He's waiting for you = He's awaiting you (más literario, afectado)

• cool = "guay" (significa en realidad "fresco").
Aunque hoy día se utiliza más la expresión "It rocks". Es difícil estar a la última con el lenguaje coloquial porque cambia muy rápido. Sin embargo para decir que algo "no es guay, no mola", se sigue diciendo que "It sucks" (sobre todo en inglés norteamericano) y "It stinks" (en inglés británico).

• shopping cart = en inglés norteamericano "carro de la compra" ("trolley" en inglés británico).

• counter = mostrador (de tienda) / desk (para oficinas).

• beneath = debajo de, bajo (formal y literario)
En inglés hay dos formas para decir "debajo de, bajo":

under: cuando nos referimos a algo/alguien que está materialmente debajo de algo/alguien y por lo tanto cubierto; también se utiliza como sinónimo de "menos de" (under forty; under a dozen times).

below: cuando nos referimos a que algo/alguien está en un nivel inferior en cualquier parte (below the surface of the lake; in the flat below) y cuando pensamos en una escala vertical (3 degrees below zero; below sea level).

Por lo tanto en el caso de esta canción diríamos: "Under her white apron"

• to bag(ged) [up] = poner en bolsas.

• bored = aburrido, aburrida, aburridos, aburridas. Un truco:

be + adjetivo-ed (estar + adjetivo)
be + adjetivo-ing (ser + adjetivo)

He is bored. / He is boring. (Está aburrido. / Es aburrido)

• drift(ed) away = alejarse

• above

"above" para hablar de posición, al igual que "over" significa "sobre" pero above indica posición "más arriba" (una posición cualquiera más alta) mientras que over indica "encima de" (una posición inmediatamente más alta) así como movimiento horizontal (de un lado a otro).

The painting is above the fireplace. (En cualquier punto de la pared sobre la chimenea)
The painting is over the fireplace. (Exactamente sobre la chimenea)
This team is above us in the championship. (En cualquier punto de la clasificación)
This team is over us in the championship. (Justo por encima de nosotros)

• Checkout line = cola de la caja.
En inglés británico "hacer cola" se dice "to queue up" mientras que los norteamericanos prefieren la expresión "to line up".

• lift [up] = levantar
He lifted his head (up). (Levantó la cabeza.)
En este caso, la expresión "be lifted up" es animarse, levantar el ánimo, entusiasmarse...
lift...into, (levantar para) meter dentro
